MCB Bank Overview:
MCB Bank Limited is a Pakistani multinational commercial bank headquartered in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. With a vast network comprising 1,551 branches across Pakistan, it stands as one of the country’s largest banking institutions. The majority shares of the bank are held by Pakistani company Nishat Group and Malaysian Bank May Bank.
Established to cater to the banking needs of the South Asian business community, MCB Bank was founded by Adam G Group on July 9, 1947. Following its nationalization in 1974 during the tenure of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, it became the first bank to undergo privatization in 1991. A consortium led by Nishat Group, a Pakistani corporate entity, acquired the bank. As of June 2008, Nishat Group holds a controlling interest in MCB Bank. The bank is presently helmed by its president, Shoaib Mumtaz.
Mian Muhammad Mansha, chairman of both Mansha Group and MCB, oversees the diversified business interests of the group, spanning banking, textiles, cement, and insurance sectors. In line with market demands, MCB Bank introduced an Islamic banking unit to provide Shariah-compliant products and services, with dedicated Islamic banking branches established in six cities.
In 2005, the bank rebranded from Muslim Commercial Bank Limited to MCB Bank Limited to better position itself in international markets. The name change was prompted by challenges faced in securing licenses, particularly from Western countries, due to the word “Muslim” in its previous name. In 2008, MCB Bank relocated its headquarters from MCB Tower in Karachi to Lahore, moving to a newly constructed facility named MCB House, situated on Ghous-ul-Azam Street, commonly known as Jail Road.
